Charles Michael Place passed away peacefully on November 27th, the morning after Thanksgiving. He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Ann McGregor Place and his father C. Pat Place. Charles was born September 12, 1951 in Corning, Iowa. He graduated from South Harrison High School in Bethany, Missouri in 1969 and from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville in the fall of 1972. After graduating he went to work for McGladrey, Hansen & Dunn in Iowa City, Iowa, as a certified public accountant. He left in 1975 to become an assistant manager for Place's Discount Stores. He rose through the company to become a buyer for and eventually CEO of the Place's discount stores. During his tenure, the company became employee-owned. With the sale of the company to ShopCo in 1999, Charles retired at the age of 48 and turned to philanthropic work. In his retirement, Charles volunteered his time and talent to the Northwest Missouri State University Foundation, Northwest Missouri Community Foundation, Northwest Missouri Enterprise Facilitators, Abbott's Advisory Council, Sparks of Hope, the Girl Scouts, the Albany Carnegie Library and the Rolling Hills Creative Living. In addition, he dedicated time to being an avid supporter of the youth of Albany, writing sports articles for the Albany Ledger, and promoting Northwest Missouri State football through his Bearcat Fans Newsletter. In recognition for some of these efforts, he was awarded the Northwest Missouri State University Turret Alumni Service Award, the Sullivan Award of Catholic Charities, and the Missouri Community Betterment Award for Adult Leadership.
