Charles Patterson "Pat" Place passed away peacefully the afternoon of Good Friday, April 10th. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Ann McGregor, brother Robert and parents Charles and Lucille (Harned) Place. Pat was born August 16th, 1928 in Albany, Missouri and graduated from Albany High School in 1946. He was a long-time executive of Place's Discount Stores from 1949-1991 providing leadership for the growth from just six stores in 1950 to thirty-four stores at his retirement from active management in 1987. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bethany Trust Company from 1967-1993 serving many of those years as Chairman of the Board. Pat also served on the Boards of Directors of Northwest Medical Center and Noll Memorial Hospital and the Corning (IA) City Council as well as generous participation in other civic, development and volunteer committees and boards through both his time and resources. Pat was chair of the successful effort to pass the May, 1972 bond issue funding the construction of the South Harrison High School. Pat also had a life-long interest in music beginning as a drummer with area swing bands during the 1940's and 1950's and continuing through the accumulation of an extensive collection of original era swing band recordings and books plus his own writings on this topic. Survivors include sons Greg (Carol) of Kansas City, Charles (Linda) of Albany, Richard (Lynn) of Austin, Texas, and Ed (Colleen) of Liberty. Survivors also include sister-in-law Carolyn Place of Evergreen, CO, grandchildren Matthew of Spokane, WA, Ted of Kansas City, Erin of Chicago, Brian of Prairie Village, KS, Nick of New York, Kristen of Liberty, Dan of Austin, TX, Brad of Liberty, and Ryan of Austin, TX, and great-granchildren Ben, Charlie and Claire. The family invites visitors to join them Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Roberson-Polley Chapel in Albany. Memorial Graveside Services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 15 at the Grandview Cemetery, Albany.
