Obituary

Don W. Slayden, 87 of Albany passed away Friday, December 18, 2009 at Crestview Nursing Home in Bethany. Don, along with his twin brother Doyle were born May 19, 1922 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Their parents were Lawrence and Pearl (Killin) Slayden. In 1929, Don moved to Dearborn, Missouri. He worked on farms and in the lumberyard at Dearborn. He entered the army in 1942 becoming a member of the 9th Armored Division, Company C 60th Armored Infantry Battalion. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton. While serving he received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medals. Don moved to Mound City in 1952, working for Holt County Co-op, Ideker Motor Company and MO DOT when he retired. In 1971, he was united in marriage to B. Joyce (Carter) Wattenbarger. Don and Joyce moved to Albany in November of 2001. Don was a member of the First Baptist Church of Albany, a member of the American Legion Post #121 of Mound City and a life member of the VFW Post #5329 of Albany. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Doyle, brother Charles, sisters Pansy Ruark, Dorothy Pryor, Lois Fisher, Margaret Slayden and Lucille Gray. Survivors include his wife Joyce of the home in Albany and a sister-in-law, Thelma Slayden and nieces and nephews.
