Elizabeth Maxine Smith, 96 of New Hampton, Missouri passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 at an Albany hospital. Maxine, the daughter of Edgar and Margaret (Bender) Claytor was born July 28, 1912 in New Hampton, Missouri. Maxine lived her entire life in Gentry and Harrison Counties. She graduated from Bethany High School and attended Design School in Kansas City. She was employed at Ferguson Grocery, Albany Supply Store and Townsend Wall in St. Joseph. On April 4, 1942, Maxine married Eddie Carl Smith. Maxine and Carl moved to their farm near New Hampton following his return from World War II. Carl preceded her in death December 25, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Kathleen (Claytor) May. Maxine shared her artistic talents in many ways, especially with the church community of the New Hampton Methodist Church. Caring friends and neighbors, including Red Blessing, Gary Barnett and Judith & Dorothea Walp families, generously contributed to her care, enabling her to remain at home during a lengthy illness.
