Eunice Arlene Bender Miller, 97, of Bethany, Missouri and formerly of Albany, Missouri, passed away at the Bethany Care Center on May 21, 2013. Eunice was born on August 4, 1915, to Walter and Maude Carter Bender of New Hampton, Missouri. She was the third of six children. Eunice attended Maryville Teachers' College, now Northwest Missouri State University. She taught in rural schools until her marriage to Louis Ellsworth Miller on December 23, 1939. In 1947, they moved to a farm near Stanberry, Missouri. She taught at country schools in Island City, the Jennings School near Alanthus Grove and then the Stanberry Public School until she retired in 1976. After the birth of three children, she attended summer school and completed her Bachelor's Degree in August, 1959. In 1988, Louis and Eunice moved to Albany and lived there until they went to the Bethany Care Center in 2006. Eunice was a member of the Albany Christian Church and taught Sunday school and enjoyed singing old church hymns. She was an avid crossword puzzle worker and a meticulous seamstress. She made clothing for her family and completed many beautiful quilts entirely by hand. Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis, brothers Herman and Randall Bender, sisters Louise Bender and Elaine Brown, three grandsons, Clinton Starmer, Jerry Craig and Levi Ellis. Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Van Meter, Guthrie Center, IA; Glenda Ellis and husband Jerry of Bethany; son, David Miller and wife Mary Lu, Washington, IA; sister, Mildred Osborn; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Friday, May 24 at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany with burial in the Grandview Cemetery, Albany. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday at the chapel, where friends may call anytime after 8:00 AM Friday.
