Obituary

Kenneth "Bud" Phillips, 84, of Linwood, Kansas peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Providence Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas following a ten-week valiant battle fighting MRSA and related health complications.

Bud was the first son, born on July 30, 1939, in Stanberry, Missouri to William "Tex" and Emma Margaret (Boatwright) Phillips.  His parents preceded him in death.

On August 29, 1959, Bud was united in marriage to Madonna Pickering in Miami, OK.  After a stint in the Army at Fort Gordan in Georgia, Bud and Madonna returned to Kansas to pursue a lifelong career in the restaurant business and follow their passion for showing quarter horses, raising buffalo and tending exotic cattle.

A life-long member of the American Quarter Horse Associations (AQHA), Bud's most memorable accomplishment was winning the 1993 Reserve World Champion in Oklahoma City with their horse named "A Dandy Design."    Bud and Madonna truly enjoyed their quiet life in Linwood, KS tending to their array of pets and tinkering with their farm equipment.  Bud was an immensely kind soul, always offering a helping hand and providing generous tips to his favorite waitresses!

Survivors: Sons, Jeff (Lori) Phillips, Bonner Springs, KS and Kenny Jones, Loveland, CO; and Daughters, Pam Widmer, Baldwin City, KS and Margaret Kathy (Thomas) Graff, Wichita, KS, along with ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by siblings Keith Phillips, Kansas City, KS and Betty Lou (Frank) Carter, Garfield, AR.
