Obituary

Martha Patricia (Pat) Manring was born November 14, 1927 in St. Joseph, Missouri and died February 23, 2016 in Albany Missouri.

She was the daughter of Walter Scott Norman and Opal Marie (Kinman) Norman. She had a brother, Walter Scott Norman, Jr. and a sister, Anita Joan Phillips, both of whom preceded her in death.

Pat graduated from Albany High School in 1945. She worked as a typesetter for the Albany Capitol and became a diligent proofreader as a result. All her life, she would read the paper with pen in hand, marking spelling and grammatical errors.

On June 25, 1949, she married Gordon Maschil Manring and after living in town for a few years, they moved to the farm east of Albany where they began an adventure lasting over 50 years raising and educating eight children. Pat could make a meal out of nothing, in whatever quantity was needed, usually with only a pressure cooker and an iron skillet. She compiled countless hours every day at the wringer washer, the kitchen stove and behind the wheel taking children to and from school and scouting activities. She seemed tireless. She and Gordon wanted their children to have the college educations they never had and they worked and sacrificed to make that happen. There were seldom any lectures but the values of honesty, hard work, self discipline and respect for others were instilled in her family.

Pat was a member of the Albany United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women for over 60 years. She lined all eight children up each Sunday to head off to Sunday School and Church. Attendance was not optional.

Pat was also active in organizing and participating in fund-raising for the Albany R-III High School band and music programs over the years, as well as the Gentry County Historical Society, the Genealogy Society, the VFW Auxiliary, Albany Alumni Association, and the Carnegie Public Library. She enjoyed golf, flower gardening, yard work and a daily cup of coffee (or two) with good friends.

She had a life-long interest in local history and her last continuing job was updating Grandview Cemetery's burial records. She was the sixth generation of her family to live in Albany. Her ancestors built the first frame house in Albany and probably in the county in 1846.

Pat was preceded in death by Gordon in 2011, her parents and brother and sister. She is survived by her children, Edward (Nancy) Manring, Mary (Richard) McConkey, William Manring, John (Beverly) Manring, Nancy Holman, Maurice (Michele) Manring, Marvin (Mary Anne) Manring, and Sally (Eric) Lykins. She leaves twelve grandchildren, Mackenzie Manring, Marissa (Steven) Meyer, Mairnee Manring, John (Tessa) McConkey, Katie (Jason) Dias, Meredith (Nathan) Manville, Lauren (Anthony) Hoppins, Abby Holman, Elizabeth Manring, Lucas Manring, Christopher Lykins and Haley Lykins as well as four great-grandchildren, Ellie and Owen Dias, and Madelyn and Wyatt McConkey and a host of nieces and nephews, in laws and so many friends.
