Maurice Lee Forbis, age 83 went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 3, 2009. Maurice, the son of James H. and Carrie (Terry) Forbis was born November 19, 1925 in Albany, Missouri. Maurice attended Dorsey Country School for 8 years. While growing up, he received the FFA State Farmer Award, worked as a sales clerk for Fowler Gamble Store and was a projectionist for the Rigney Theater. Following his graduatation in 1943 from Albany High School, Maurice was drafted into the United States Army in 1944. While in the service, he was joined in marriage to Lola Fay McGinley of Albany on November 13, 1944 in Troy, Kansas before shipping out overseas to the Philippines. Maurice was Honorably Discharged from the Army in 1946. He then joined the Albany Reserves for three years and was discharged in 1949. In 1946, he started working for P.M. Place Stores Company in Albany as a Manager Trainee. He was soon placed as a Store Manager in Knoxville, Iowa and was the first store manager that was not a member of the Place Family. In Iowa, Maurice was a member of the Baty-Tucker Post #168 and was the Post Commander and 6th District Historian for 3 years. In 1956, Maurice transferred to the Rock Port, Missouri store, retiring in November of 1987 after 41 years of service. While living in Rock Port, Maurice was a member and Past Commander of the Ralph Greer Post #49, a member of the Christian Church, also serving as Elder and Deacon. In 1966, he was appointed Atchison County Civil Director by Governor Warren Hearnes. This later became the Emergency Mangement Agency, where he served as director until 1987, then served as Assistant Director until 2001. Maurice was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, working with scouting since 1951. He touched the lives of many, mentoring boys to learn skills and manners. He received the highest award, the Silver Beaver given to a volunteer in 1973. Maurice and Lola Fay moved back to Albany in 1992 to be near family and friends in the community where he grew up. While living in Albany, he was a member of the Albany First Christian Church. Maurice served as Albany Alumni committee president. He was a life member of the Donald Holden American Legion Post #106 serving as Adjutant and served on the Boys State Selection Committee. He served with the legion for 66 years. He was a life member of the VFW Post #5239 and a member of the Bethany-Albany Military Honors Burial Group. In his spare time, his hobbies included locksmithing, miniature model railroading, family history for 5 families and was a member of the Missouri State Genealogical Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Fay of 59 years on December 11, 2003, parents, brothers, Clyde and Glenn Forbis and his sisters, Mary Dills and Alice Funk. Survivors: Daughter, Carolyn Taylor and husband Charles of Blue Springs, MO; Son, James Forbis, Yuba City, CA; Grandchildren, Jaime and Matt Calhoun, Blue Springs, MO; Brett Taylor, Blue Springs, MO; James Forbis, Scappoose, OR; Jenny and Rich Hoerauf, Redmond, OR; Great-Grandchildren, Joel and Kyle Taylor, Independence, MO; Jonathan and Hunter Calhoun, Blue Springs, MO; In-Laws, Maxine Forbis and Dorothy and Max McGinley all of Albany; Nieces and Nephews, Margaret and Jim Adams, St. Joseph, MO; Ronald and Mary Virginia Forbis, Carl Junction, MO; James and Cris Funk, Kansas City, MO; Anita and Charles Willits, St. Joseph, MO; Terry Forbis, Albany; Randall and Roger McGinley, St. Joseph; Robert and Dixie McGinley, Albany; several great-nieces and nephews and special friend, Norma Ruth Deason of Albany. Maurice loved life and dedicated his time to God, Family, Country, Friends and Community. The family would like to thank you for celebrating his life with them.
