Obituary

On March 29, 2026 Palm Sunday morning, Shirley Steiner, a smiling, sweet, loving mother and friend passed into the next life. Remaining are her children, Connie Washburn (Gerald) of Sierra Madre, CA, Serena Steiner of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Mark Steiner (Lisa) of Weston, MO. Also surviving is her sister, Shirlene Kier. On April 11 the family honored Shirley at a graveside celebration of life at Grandview Cemetery in Albany, MO, where she joined her late husband Wayne Steiner (died in 2017).

Born in Albany to Lois (Manion) and Thomas Deason, on a night so snowy the doctor had to arrive on horseback, Shirley grew up with sister Shirlene and brother Samuel (died in 2020). After moving to St. Joseph, she met and married Wayne. Shirley worked for several local businesses and churches where she loved meeting and helping people. In her spare time she and Wayne enjoyed playing cards, family vacations in the Ozarks, and leading the choir and youth groups at Woodson Chapel Christian Church. Shirley loved going to church and being part of a community.

She also loved to sew and bake…she was known all over town for her “Shirley Steiner chocolate cake.” For a time she was a member of the Red Hat Society and The Shirley Club. Later Shirley enjoyed organizing adult church group trips that toured surrounding attractions. She could not drive past a garage sale without stopping, which propelled her into her last career, antique booths and estate sales. Everyone knew the whereabouts of Shirley when they spotted her lime green Honda Element named “Kiwi.”

Her most recent years were spent in the Los Angeles area with her two daughters, where she loved the sunshine and people (and dog) watching.
