Vilma Maxine Harris Palmer was born January 23, 1919. She passed from this life at Fairview Assisted Living in King City, Missouri on Sunday evening December 28, 2014 at the age of 95 years. Vilma was born in the rural Whitesville area. Her parents were Edwin and Julia Elizabeth (Goss) Harris who were farmers, who moved in March to the rural Flag Springs area. Vilma said the chickens died and the hogs got cholera so they moved to the city! Her father worked at various jobs; one being a janitor at Central High School. Vilma attended Blair Elementary School, Bliss Junior High and then graduated from Central High School in 1936. She continued her education at Platte-Gard Business School and began her professional work at St. Joseph Retail Credit Bureau as a bookkeeper in 1937. Meanwhile W.D. Palmer from the McFall area went to St. Joseph to seek his fortune. There he found Vilma in November of 1937. They were married in March of 1939 and made their home in St. Joseph until April 1942. They bought 127 acres and moved to rural McFall area near WD's parents, Mattie and Edgar Palmer. The "old house" was one typical of the period and Vilma quoted many a time awakening on a cold winter's morning to frost on top of the bed quilts. To provide better shelter for the family of three (a son, Jerome, had been born in 1943) WD built a one room cement block building complete with a "loft" for the family to live while the real "NEW" house was built. This building was later known as the "chicken house". The "NEW" house was completed in 1951 just in time for the daughter (Joyce) to be born. Vilma was active in the McFall Methodist Church being Sunday school superintendent as well as teaching classes until the closing of that church. Her membership was moved to the Albany Methodist Church and she attended until her eye sight failed preventing her from driving. She was also a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, participating in both the McFall and the Albany chapters. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, W.D. Palmer and her brother, Byron Harris.
